Hype Her Hoops Session 1 Report

Anaheim, California: Session I of the Hype Her Hoops Circuit started off with a bang. Teams from Southern California, Arizona, Nevada, and even as far as Alaska competed in one of the best youth girls’ basketball tournaments held in California in recent years.

80+ teams went toe to toe, to see who would bring home the championship in their respective age divisions. Hype Her Hoops Session I had girls’ teams from 5th grade-8th grade and the divisions were separated by Gold and Silver. For the 8th graders, the Super Girls Division was introduced.

The Slogan for Hype Her Hoops Session I was “The Hype Is Real”, and the Hype was definitely real at this event. The Super Girls division showcased arguably some of the best class of 2027 & 2028 players & teams in the country. Programs included West Coast Premier, Cal Stars, Cal Storm, The Squad, GBL, Queen Ballers, Alaska Stars & many more.

CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES RECAPS

14U/8th Grade Super Girls Division

Cal Storm 14U  – 41  Sports Academy Swish32
The Super Girls Division proved to be justified by the name of the division because it was definitely “SUPER”. Cal Storm 14U Grey ran the table in that division, but it wasn’t a cakewalk. Cal Storm went 5-0 in the tournament with victories over Paul George Elite 54-47, Inspire Basketball Academy 57-38, and West Coast Premier 43-28. In the semi-final game, they had a late comeback and downed a tough Newport Rockets Team 33-32, and in the championship game, they beat a very talented Sports Academy Swish squad 41-31. Tournament MVP Kaleena Smith led Cal Storm with 16 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals. Isabella Sims chipped in with 7 points. For Sports Academy, Swish Ava Rogerson poured 8 points, and Angelina Habis accounted for 7 points and 3 rebounds.

11U/5th Grade Division

Cal Storm 11U29   Her-I-Cane Mambas22

The Cal Storm 11U squad pulled out a hard-fought victory over the Her-I-Cane Mambas. Cal Storm 11U breezed through pool play & the 1st two rounds of bracket play but found a formidable opponent in the championship game with the Her-ICane Mambas.
Taiyanna Samuels led all scorers with 15 points, she also had 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 blocks to lead the Cal Storm 11U to the victory. Layla Singleton led the Her-I-Cane Mambas with 8 points, 9 rebounds & 2 steals.

12U/6th Grade Division

Cal Stars43   Run N Jump Hoops35

The Cal Stars went 5-0 in the tournament by averaging 50 points per game and holding their opponents to 22 points a game. In the Championship game, the Stars leading scorer was Aynya Hardy who had 12 points 3 rebounds, and 10 steals, followed by Sawyer Fogel who had 10 points, 10 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 2 steals. 
Run N Jump Hoops put up a strong battle but fell a little short in the championship game. Kyra Fukute led the team with 12 points and 6 rebounds. Kyndall Williams also had a solid game with 8 points and 5 rebounds.

13U/7th Grade East Division

The Prodigy Girls dominated the field in the 13U/7th Grade East Division by going 5-0 on their way to winning the championship. Cayla Murray accounted for all but 4 points with either a bucket or an assist, she finished the game with 18 points, 10 assists, and 4 steals. Vanessa Garcia led the way for Run N Jump Hoops with 14 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals.

13U/7th Grade West Division

Squad39   Queen Ballers36

This was one of the best games of the tournament, which saw the Queen Ballers from Sacramento go back and forth with The Squad. Eventually, The Squad pulled it out late as Hamiley Arenas hit two long-range bombs late in the game to give the Squad the lead with under a minute to play in the game. A controversial charge call late against the Queen Ballers also seemed to turn the tide.

Hamiley Arenas led all scorers with 16 points and 3 made three-point field goals. Chloe Jenkins chipped in with 7 points & 4 rebounds. The Queen Ballers were led by the inside play of Callia Johnson who had 10 points and 19 rebounds. Alexis Valenzuela had 11 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals in the championship game. 

14U/8th Grade Silver West Division

We R 141   SoCal Aces36

We R 1 squeaked one out against a very good SoCal Aces team. Alyssa So scored 13 points, and also had 3 rebounds and 4 steals. Kayla Priest scored 10 points, and also chipped in with 8 rebounds and 5 steals for We R 1. For the SoCal Aces Rubimae Boulanger had 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals. Hollen Vann contributed with 9 points, & 3 rebounds.

14U/8th Grade Silver East Division

Rage Elite31   West Coast Premier30

In a very tightly contested game Rage Elite came out on top with a 31-30 victory over West Coast Premier the teams faced each other in pool play with Rage Elite winning that game 32-19, but the championship game was much closer. Sarah Cosio had 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists. Presley Kushner added 12 points. West Coast Premier was led by Hayden Crane-Henning with 7 points.

14U/8th Grade Gold Division

Cal Sparks South35  Frohlich Academy26

Kayla Rice led the way for the Cal Sparks South team in the championship game, she had 16 points, 5 rebounds, and 1 steal. Cal Sparks South went 4-0 in the tournament. Leah O’Toner chipped in 7 points and Stacy Echtenkamp contributed 6 points for the Sparks. Naomi Kemle & Izabella Chavez both scored 8 points apiece for Frohlich Academy.
